Course Description:
These performance-oriented vocal music groups are open to all students in grades 9-12 who enjoy singing and performing. Students will warm up with vocal exercises, be taught the rudiments of music theory, correct singing, and prepare vocal pieces for performance. Students will participate in pep assemblies, high school athletic events, the Christmas and Spring Concerts, and other school assemblies that may be scheduled and are considered Summative Assessments. A Cappella Choir is also required to participate at Baccalaureate and Graduation. The choir students will also have the opportunity to sing at the Wheeling Nailers game and solo and ensemble contest.
Expected Yearly Objectives:
To develop the fundamental music skills in notation and sight-singing, while recognizing musical elements and demonstrating expressive qualities in varying styles of choral music.
To develop correct vocal techniques while contributing to the blend, balance, and quality of the ensemble by having the ability to sing a part securely.
To develop self-discipline by functioning as a responsible member of the
organization.
To develop personal character traits for confidence, leadership, poise, and dependability, as well as provide an avenue for self-expression.
To develop a desire to continue musical experiences.
Required Supplies:
A Pencil
Choir t-shirt that will run $10-$13
Concert Attire:
Seventh Grade Girls
Eighth Grade Girls
Freshmen Girls- Long black dress pants and a dressy black shirt (Must follow school dress code.)
Seventh Grade Boys
Eighth Grade Boys
Freshmen Boys- Black dress pants and socks with a white, gray or black dress shirt and tie.
Sophomore and A Cappella students will wear robes and should wear ether a skirt, dress or long black dress pants and a collared shirt.
ALL CHOIR STUDENTS MUST HAVE BLACK DRESS SHOES FOR PERFORMANCES. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS!
Classroom Expectations:
Be in your assigned place on the risers BEFORE the bell rings.
Show respect for the director, accompanist, other members of the choir and yourself.
Be responsible for You- NO EXCUSES!
Show respect for the choir room, equipment and the music.
Cell Phones should only be out if Mrs. Carroll instructs you to have them out!
Sing using the correct posture, breathing techniques, and vocal skills.
Leave all food, candy and gum outside the choir room.
Every student has 5 restroom passes per grading period. Please try to take restroom visits between classes.
Complete all assignments and paperwork in a timely manner.
Attend and participate at ALL scheduled choir performances.
Put forth your best effort everyday with a positive attitude.
Types of Assignments:
Written assignments and listening assignments will be given. All concerts are required and considered summative assessments.

Grading Policy:
A= Excellent effort, constant improvement, leadership demonstration, completion of all written assignments, and participation at all concerts or performances.
B= Good effort most of the time, some signs of improvement, and participation at all concerts or performances.
C= Random display of effort, little improvement, poor attendance, and missing a concert or performance in a grading period.
D= Very little effort, lack of improvement, excessive tardiness to class, poor attendance, and missing more than one performance in a grading period.
F= Failure to demonstrate any effort in class, total lack of participation, excessive tardiness to class, poor attendance, and absence from all concerts or performances in a grading period.
Homework Guidelines:
When homework is assigned it is expected on the day it is due. Writing assignments will be given throughout the year.
Edison Vocal Music Boosters will meet monthly and all parents and guardians are encouraged to attend.
